As some of you may have noticed, steamlocomotive.info can display locomotive wheel arrangements in one of three formats: You select this functionality by clicking on Custom Views on the front page, and using the drop down menu to select one of the above choices. This puts a cookie on your computer that identifies your preference. It works pretty well. This evening, quite by chance I discovered a bug that causes the system to select UIC wheel arrangements for some locomotives irrespective of the choice you may have made. A fix is being designed for this bug and it (hopefully) will be implemented soon. Doug

There's also the system used in Switzerland which is, as far as I know, unique to that country. Wheel arrangements are shown by the number of powered axles out of the total number of axles. For example 4/8. This could be a 4-8-4 as we know it. It's a bit confusing and we should perhaps not use it, even for Swiss locos. A 2-6-2 comes out the same as a 4-6-0 (3/5 in both cases).

A wise decision. As I said, it's a confusing system - more use for identifying the class of the loco than anything else.
